INDONESIA TARGETS GLOBAL RICE EXPORTS WITH 12 MILLION TON SURPLUS FORECAST
Indonesia is poised to achieve a rice surplus of up to 12 million tons in 2025, positioning itself to enter the global rice export market. Indonesia's Agriculture Minister, Andi Amran Sulaiman, highlighted a significant boost in rice absorption, with state logistics agency Bulog collecting 840,000 tons as of April 10—a 2,000 percent increase from last year. National rice stocks are expected to hit a record 3 million tons by the end of the month. The government is driving this surge through initiatives like land optimization, expansion of rice fields, infrastructure upgrades, and better access to fertilizers, alongside an increased floor price for unhusked rice to support farmers. Infrastructure remains a central focus, with improvements in irrigation, farm roads, and drying facilities prioritized. The government also plans to expand downstream processing as rice cultivation intensifies, with some areas now producing three harvests per year. With a target of developing 3 million new hectares of rice fields, the country could produce up to 30 million tons annually—enabling a substantial export surplus. This ambition supports President Prabowo Subianto’s broader food sovereignty agenda, aimed at achieving national food self-sufficiency and maximizing Indonesia’s year-round agricultural potential due to its tropical climate.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-eyes-global-rice-export-market-with-projected-12-million-ton-surplus# (ICE GIACARTA)
