INDONESIA EYES FOREIGN INVESTMENT BOOST IN WASTE-TO-ENERGY SECTOR

Foreign investors from countries such as Singapore, Japan, China, and several European nations are showing strong interest in Indonesia’s waste-to-energy (WtE) sector. However, complicated regulations and a lengthy licensing process have deterred many from committing. In response, the Indonesian government is working to simplify procedures and enhance the ease of doing business, particularly by streamlining the permit process, which currently involves multiple ministries and local authorities. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, emphasized the importance of resolving these regulatory barriers to attract more investment in this financially viable and sustainable industry. To further support WtE development, Indonesia plans to merge three presidential regulations into a unified policy that promotes the use of environmentally friendly technologies. The government will also revise electricity pricing for WtE-generated power, raising it to 18–20 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), compared to the current 13.5 cents/kWh tariff set by state utility PT PLN. This move aims to improve the financial attractiveness of WtE projects, which will also receive backing from Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, highlighting both the economic and environmental benefits of the initiative.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/351441/indonesia-eyes-foreign-investment-boost-in-waste-to-energy-sector?utm_source=antaranews&utm_medium=desktop&utm_campaign=top_news (ICE GIACARTA)
