INDONESIA MOVES TO REVOKE KEY TRADE POLICIES IN RESPONSE TO U.S. TARIFFS HIKE

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has announced plans to revoke and adjust several trade and industrial policies from the previous administration under President Joko Widodo, in response to the United States' decision to impose a 32% import tariff on Indonesian products starting April 9, 2025. Among the key policies targeted are the revocation of Trade Ministry Regulation No. 8/2024, the removal of import quotas, and the elimination of the quarantine process for imported goods. These measures are intended to streamline regulations, create a more open and competitive business climate, and address concerns raised by business groups and labor unions. Additionally, Prabowo seeks to simplify technical regulations (Pertek) and relax the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) requirements, particularly in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. This deregulation aims to ease business licensing, attract investment, and serve as a negotiation strategy with the U.S. to protect domestic industry competitiveness. Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto emphasized that these policy shifts are part of broader efforts to reform Non-Tariff Measures (NTMs) and strengthen Indonesia’s economic resilience amid global trade challenges.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/4072/policy-and-governance/indonesia-moves-to-revoke-key-trade-policies-in-response-to-u-s-tarrifs-hike (ICE GIACARTA)
