HASSAN'S VISIT TO WASHINGTON: ECONOMIC AND DIPLOMATIC TEST
Prime Minister Dr. Jafar Hassan will travel to Washington, D.C., on Sunday for an official visit regarded as one of the most significant milestones in the history of modern Jordanian governments—not only due to its political weight, but also because of its strategic timing amid shifting political and economic dynamics. The visit comes at a time of escalating regional tensions in Gaza, the West Bank, Syria, and beyond, as well as mounting economic pressures within Jordan. It is seen as an early and critical test of Prime Minister Hassan's ability to navigate complex domestic and international challenges. This visit is believed to be the first of its kind at the governmental level in over a decade. Former Prime Minister Omar Razzaz's 2019 trip to Washington was limited to meetings with financial and international institutions and did not involve direct engagement with the U.S. administration. What sets this visit apart is its focused and executive-driven nature. The Prime Minister will be accompanied by a small, specialized delegation—an intentional choice reflecting the government's emphasis on substance over formality. This approach aligns with Hassan’s commitments in his response to the Royal Designation Letter: to act swiftly, cut unnecessary spending, and deliver tangible progress on the economic modernization plan within a defined timeframe. Economic issues are expected to feature prominently in discussions with senior officials from the Trump administration, particularly against the backdrop of resurging U.S. protectionist policies. Washington’s recent announcement of expanded tariffs on imports raises concerns for small, open economies like Jordan, which depend heavily on exports to drive growth and create jobs. (ICE AMMAN)
