Returning inflation to 5% target requires moderately tight policy – National Bank headAchieving the inflation target will require the National Bank to continue its moderately tight monetary policy, the National Bank Chairman Timur Suleimenov told a Thursday briefing."The global trade situation remains uncertain due to U.S. measures and retaliatory steps that have been taken by the other countries, which sparks a new wave of fragmentation, deglobalization and logistical challenges. Given the current developments, there is an increasing risk of a global recession," Suleimenov said."In the current situation, we certainly need to bring inflation back to a 5% target, which will require a moderately tight policy," the chief banker added.On April 11, 2025 the National Bank made a decision to maintain the base rate at 16.5%.
