INSIDE RWF140BN PROJECT TO UPGRADE KIGALI ROADS
On March 24, the Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA) launched the $100 million (Rwf140 billion) Kigali Urban Transport Improvement Project (KUTI), aimed at easing traffic congestion and transforming Kigali’s transport infrastructure. In partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), the project will begin by upgrading three major road junctions: Chez Lando (Gisimenti), Gishushu, and Kicukiro/Sonatubes. These junctions will feature advanced infrastructure such as underpasses and flyovers to streamline traffic flow. For example, Chez Lando will have a 740-meter underpass, Gishushu a 500-meter flyover, and Sonatubes a 620-meter tunnel, all designed to reduce congestion and improve road safety. Beyond these initial improvements, the project aligns with broader urban mobility goals, including the promotion of non-motorised transport, support for e-mobility, and enhanced accessibility for people with disabilities. In total, Kigali aims to upgrade 11 major road junctions, including areas like Gisozi, Nyabugogo, Rwandex, and Kibagabaga, with additional infrastructure such as dedicated bus and cyclist lanes, and pedestrian bridges. The project is expected to generate around 400 temporary construction jobs, with at least 30% of them designated for women, contributing to economic growth and inclusivity. As part of ongoing efforts to improve urban transport, Kigali will also pilot dedicated bus lanes along the Central Business District–Rwandex–Sonatubes–Giporoso corridor. These lanes will operate during peak hours on weekdays to prioritize public transport and alleviate traffic. AfDB and Rwandan officials view this initiative as a transformative step toward a more efficient, inclusive, and sustainable urban transport system. (ICE ADDIS ABEBA)
