INDONESIAN TPT INDUSTRY GAINS EXPORT MOMENTUM AMID TRUMP’S TARIFF MEASURES
Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policy presents a strategic opportunity for Indonesia, particularly in the textile and textile products (TPT) sector. Although the U.S. imposed a 32% tariff on Indonesian goods, key TPT products such as apparel and footwear were not affected, as they are not considered strategic commodities. This exemption, coupled with higher tariffs on competing countries like China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Bangladesh, gives Indonesia a competitive edge in the U.S. market. Airlangga noted that global brands like Nike Inc. have already engaged with the Indonesian government to explore these opportunities. To capitalize on this favorable environment, Airlangga is urging TPT industry players to scale up production and efficiency. He also highlighted that the pricing margin between what U.S. consumers pay and what Indonesian exporters receive signals room for growth. Other sectors, such as furniture, also stand to benefit, as they are excluded from U.S. tariffs due to a trade conflict with Canada. Meanwhile, gold and copper are spared from high tariffs due to strong U.S. investments in Indonesia, like those in PT Freeport Indonesia. Finance Minister Sri Mulyani added that several manufacturing sectors could improve their competitiveness in the U.S. by leveraging Indonesia’s relatively lower tariffs, potentially positioning the country as a main supplier for select goods.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/4063/markets-and-finance/trumps-tariff-policy-creates-an-export-boost-opportunity-for-indonesian-tpt-sector (ICE GIACARTA)
