INDONESIA EYES BOOST IN US ENERGY, AGRICULTURE IMPORTS TO EASE TARIFFS

Indonesia is planning to increase imports of US oil, gas, and key agricultural commodities as part of ongoing negotiations to ease reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States. Indonesia's Chief Economic Affairs Minister, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that the government is exploring options to purchase more liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US, reallocating existing import volumes rather than increasing overall procurement. Additionally, Indonesia aims to import more soybeans and wheat, commodities for which domestic production is limited, to mitigate trade tensions. Indonesia's Minister, Hartarto, highlighted the global economic volatility caused by retaliatory trade measures, which are affecting emerging markets through currency depreciation and investment slowdowns. He noted that falling prices for commodities such as Brent crude oil, coal, and crude palm oil could help ease domestic inflationary pressures, while gold remains a valuable hedge. In 2024, Indonesia-US trade totaled nearly US$38.3 billion, with Indonesia running a US$14.3 billion surplus. The Indonesian textile industry, which consumes significant amounts of American cotton, has proposed increasing cotton imports in response to previous US tariff measures.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-eyes-boost-in-us-energy-agriculture-imports-to-ease-tariffs (ICE GIACARTA)
