Iraq's Ministry of Water Resources has announced that, as part of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani's initiative to plant five million trees across Iraq, the Ministry has so far planted 54,000 seedlings at 102 sites in Baghdad and the provinces (excluding the Kurdistan Region).Mohammed Awad Kazem, Head of the Afforestation and Nurseries Department at the ministry, told the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA) the tree-planting effort is part of a broader plan that runs from 2023 to 2025, covering both spring and autumn planting seasons. In light of progress and the importance of the project, the ministry has now raised its target to 500,000 seedlings to be planted during the current spring season. The ministry had previously received 38,700 seedlings from the Ministry of Agriculture, and an additional 5,000 seedlings were delivered this week. The initial focus was on planting in ministry sites across Baghdad, with work now expanding to other provinces.
