INDONESIA'S NICKEL PRODUCTION PROJECTED TO REACH 3.74 MILLION TONS IN 2030

The Indonesian Nickel Miners Association (APNI) projects that the country’s nickel production will reach 3.74 million tons by 2030, nearly doubling from previous levels. Nickel remains a top export commodity for Indonesia, contributing significantly to national revenue. In 2023-2024, Indonesia is expected to dominate about 65% of the global nickel market, underscoring its strong international position. However, APNI warns of the risks associated with heavy reliance on a single export destination, as 89% of nickel exports went to China in 2023. To mitigate this risk, APNI advocates for export market diversification, targeting regions such as the United States and Europe to ensure resilience against geopolitical shifts or policy changes in key markets. Beyond nickel, APNI also highlights the strategic importance of cobalt, especially for the electric vehicle battery sector, and supports policies that promote downstream processing. This approach aligns with national objectives to enhance value-added industries, foster domestic growth, and boost Indonesia’s global competitiveness in energy and technology sectors based on metal minerals.Source: https://industri.kontan.co.id/news/produksi-nikel-ri-diproyeksikan-tembus-374-juta-ton-pada-2030 (ICE GIACARTA)
