THE IMPACT OF TRUMP'S TARIFF ON THE INDONESIAN TEXTILE INDUSTRY

The U.S. reciprocal tariff policy imposing a 32% duty on Indonesian goods is expected to significantly impact the domestic textile and textile products (TPT) sector. Jemmy Kartiwa, Chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association (API), warned that exports to the U.S. could drop by 20–25% due to decreased consumer purchasing power. As demand from the U.S. falls, global producers like China, Vietnam, and Bangladesh will face overproduction and begin competing for new markets—markets Indonesia must also aggressively pursue to stay competitive. Jemmy emphasized the need to strengthen the domestic market to absorb surplus production and maintain industry stability. He also urged the government to support the TPT industry through improved regulations and avoid a flood of imported finished goods. While welcoming deregulation efforts aimed at attracting investment, Jemmy stressed the importance of protecting local industries. He recommended streamlining licensing procedures, including the Environmental Impact Assessment (AMDAL), to help domestic manufacturers expand efficiently and remain competitive in both local and global markets.Source: https://industri.kontan.co.id/news/sebesar-apa-dampak-tarif-trump-ke-industri-tekstil-dalam-negeri-ini-perkiraan-api (ICE GIACARTA)
