Central Asia can become stable supplier of energy resources to EU - Uzbek presidentCentral Asia can become a reliable partner able to ensure stable supplies of energy resources to Europe and to contribute to global decarbonization, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said in interview with Euronews in the run-up to the first European Union-Central Asian summit. The text of the interview was published in Uzbek official media on Wednesday.A major area of cooperation is the project to create a?Green Strategic Corridor?through the Caspian and Black Seas to Europe, Mirziyoyev said, adding that Central Asian countries are helping put it into practice."The implementation of this initiative will lay a solid foundation for our mutually beneficial energy connectivity," he said.According to Mirziyoyev, an important institutional platform for cooperation in renewable energy could be the establishment of an EU-Central Asia clean energy partnership, which would facilitate cooperation in the production of green hydrogen, ammonia and biofuels as sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels.Uzbekistan and other countries in the region are actively expanding their renewable energy capacity, he said, adding that the implementation of green energy and climate projects will also support the development of a?carbon credit market?in Central Asia."This mechanism will enable enterprises to attract investment in clean technology projects while serving as a platform for international cooperation in carbon trading," he said.In addition to 14 new solar and wind power plants already operating in Uzbekistan, the country plans to implement more than 50 such projects with a total capacity of 24,000 MW, Mirziyoyev said."Over the next five years, we aim to increase the share of renewable energy sources to 54%. This will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 16 million tonnes and contribute to Uzbekistan's early fulfilment of its commitment to cut emissions by 35% under the Paris Agreement," he said.
