TRUMP TARIFFS MAY HARM INDONESIA, EU EYES FASTER TRADE DEAL

The European Union has voiced strong concerns over US President Donald Trump’s newly imposed tariffs, warning that they could severely impact developing economies like Indonesia. As part of his “Liberation Day” trade initiative, Trump introduced sweeping “reciprocal” tariffs, including a 20 percent levy on EU goods and a 32 percent tariff on Indonesian exports to the US. EU trade chief Bernd Lange criticized the move as unfair, particularly to countries in the Global South, noting that such high tariffs will harm producers globally, including in the US and EU. In response, the EU is preparing countermeasures and emphasizing its commitment to supporting economic stability in developing nations.Amid rising trade tensions, the EU is accelerating its efforts to finalize a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) with Indonesia. Negotiations for the deal began in 2016 but have progressed slowly. Lange announced plans to visit Indonesia within two weeks to expedite the talks, aiming to complete the agreement by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Indonesia is preparing a diplomatic push to persuade the US to reconsider the steep tariff, with President Prabowo Subianto planning to dispatch a high-level delegation ahead of the April 9 implementation. Trump justified the tariffs by citing what he claims are disproportionately high barriers on US exports, including Indonesia’s complex import regulations.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/eu-says-trumps-tariffs-will-harm-indonesia-plans-to-speed-up-trade-pact-talks  (ICE GIACARTA)
