INDONESIA'S HOMECOMING DROPS, ECONOMIC RIPPLE EFFECTS FOLLOW
Indonesia's Eid homecoming tradition is seeing a sharp 24% decline in travelers this year, dropping to 146.48 million from 193.6 million in 2024. The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) predicts that economic circulation due to this shift will contract by 12.3 percent, mirroring the decline in travelers, with spending projected to fall from IDR 157.3 trillion (almost EUR 8.8 billion) to IDR 137.98 trillion (EUR 7.7 billion). Experts link the decline to rising unemployment, shifting social habits, and weak consumer confidence, as Indonesia faces consecutive months of deflation—0.76% in January and 0.48% in February—indicating sluggish demand. With small businesses, retail, and transport sectors heavily reliant on Eid spending, analysts warn of broader economic ripple effects.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/mudik-drops-in-2025-what-does-it-say-about-the-economy (ICE GIACARTA)
