INDONESIA SEEKS NEW MARKETS FOR SURPLUS EGGS, EYES US AND OTHER COUNTRIES
Indonesia is currently producing more chicken eggs than needed for domestic consumption, leading the government to seek international markets to manage the surplus. The Indonesian Agriculture Ministry's animal husbandry and animal health director general, Agung Suganda, announced efforts to increase exports of animal husbandry commodities while ensuring compliance with quality standards and food safety requirements of destination countries. Indonesia has a monthly egg surplus of 289 tonnes, or about 5 billion eggs, which could be exported to countries facing production deficits, such as the United States, where avian flu has disrupted production and caused a spike in prices. The government is confident that Indonesia can initially accommodate US orders totaling 1.6 million eggs per month and is exploring market potential and ensuring compliance with export protocols. Agung emphasized that exported eggs must be of high quality, free from salmonella, and without antibiotic residues to meet US Food and Drug Administration standards. Despite the export plans, the government assures that domestic needs will be prioritized, and the surplus will not interfere with local supply. Indonesia is projected to produce 6.5 million tonnes of eggs this year, exceeding the 6.2 million tonnes of domestic demand. Indonesia's Agriculture Minister, Andi Amran Sulaiman, reiterated the government's interest in exporting more eggs but stressed that domestic needs, particularly for the free meals program, must be secured first. If there is a surplus, the government will proceed with exports. Currently, Indonesia exports eggs to Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, and the government is looking to expand its export markets to include the United States and other countries.Source: https://www.thejakartapost.com/business/2025/03/29/indonesia-looks-to-us-other-countries-to-export-surplus-eggs.html (ICE GIACARTA)
