INDONESIA WILL OPERATE THREE NEW GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANTS

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) aims to bring three new geothermal power plants (PLTP) online between 2025 and 2027, with a total capacity of 395 megawatts (MW). The projects include the Lumut Balai Unit 2 PLTP in South Sumatra (55 MW), Hululais Unit 1 and 2 in Bengkulu (110 MW), and multiple co-generation projects totaling 230 MW. According to PGE’s Director of Exploration and Development, Edwil Suzandi, the Lumut Balai Unit 2 is already completed and is awaiting PT PLN’s readiness to absorb the electricity before achieving its commercial operation date (COD) in June 2025. For the co-generation projects with a combined capacity of 230 MW, PGE is currently processing an independent power producer (IPP) proposal and will proceed with a power purchase agreement (PPA) proposal next. Edwil Suzandi expressed optimism that these projects could achieve COD by late 2025 or 2026. Meanwhile, the construction of Hululais Unit 1 and 2 is dependent on PT PLN finalizing the auction documents for the power plant’s construction. If everything proceeds as planned, the Hululais PLTP is expected to become operational by 2027. To support the development of the Lumut Balai Unit 2 PLTP, PGE secured funding of US$155 million (Rp 2.40 trillion) from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This project will boost the total geothermal capacity in the Lumut Balai area to 110 MW. PGE is collaborating with Mitsubishi Corporation from Japan, SEPCO III Electric Power Construction Co. Ltd. from China, and Indonesia’s PT Wijaya Karya Tbk to develop the plant. These initiatives are part of PGE’s broader strategy to expand geothermal energy production and contribute to Indonesia’s renewable energy goals.Source: https://katadata.co.id/ekonomi-hijau/energi-baru/67e4da648cd54/pge-akan-operasikan-tiga-pembangkit-listrik-tenaga-panas-bumi-baru (ICE GIACARTA)
