INDONESIA'S GOVERNMENT TO FINALIZE REVISION OF INDUSTRIAL SALT IMPORT BAN RULES
Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has completed the process of revising the restrictions and prohibitions on salt imports, with the new policy expected to be determined soon. This revision aims to address the difficulties faced by industrial players in obtaining raw materials. The original import ban, stated in Presidential Regulation No. 126/2022, limited the import of salt products for various industries, including food, pharmaceuticals, and chlorine alkali plants. Special Staff of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Doni Ismanto Darwin, confirmed that the government will support and guarantee the availability of industrial salt raw materials, particularly for the food industry. The national salt stock currently stands at 764,932 tons, comprising 293,778 tons from PT Garam and 471,154 tons from local producers. The revised regulation will allow salt importers to utilize the remaining imported stock from 2024, which exceeds 47,000 tons, and impose conditions for fulfilling salt needs through imports until the end of 2025, if domestic supply is insufficient. This measure ensures that the national salt stock can meet the needs of the food industry until May 2025, with stability expected to improve further during the local salt harvest season starting in June. The Indonesian Food and Beverage Producers Association (Gapmmi) reported that several food industry companies have been experiencing a shortage of industrial salt since the import ban took effect earlier this year. General Chairman Adhi S. Lukman highlighted that the available stock of industrial salt is only sufficient for production needs until March 2025. The government is committed to monitoring salt availability and ensuring the smooth supply of raw materials for the food industry by promptly finalizing the revision of Presidential Regulation No. 126/2022.Source: https://ekonomi.bisnis.com/read/20250326/257/1864828/revisi-aturan-larangan-impor-garam-industri-segera-terbit-ini-bocorannya (ICE GIACARTA)
