Indonesia has significant potential to develop three key renewable energy manufacturing sectors: solar power plants (PLTS), wind power plants (PLTB), and battery energy storage systems. According to Fabby Tumiwa, Executive Director of the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), these sectors collectively hold an economic potential of up to US$ 551 billion (IDR 9,146 trillion). Solar energy generation is expected to provide the largest contribution, with an estimated economic value of US$ 236 billion, followed by wind power with US$ 75 billion, and battery energy storage systems with US$ 240 billion. This development would not only generate substantial economic value but also strengthen Indonesia’s position as a major player in the global renewable energy industry. In addition to economic benefits, the expansion of the renewable energy manufacturing industry could create approximately 9.7 million new jobs across different sectors. The solar power plant industry is projected to contribute the most, with around 5.7 million jobs, while battery energy storage systems could provide 2.2 million jobs, and wind turbine development would generate 1.8 million jobs. This large-scale job creation would help drive industrial growth, stimulate local economies, and provide employment opportunities across various skill levels, from manufacturing to engineering and maintenance roles. Fabby emphasized that the renewable energy industry could be a key driver of Indonesia’s long-term economic transformation if its full potential is harnessed. By developing a strong domestic manufacturing sector for solar, wind, and battery technologies, Indonesia can reduce its dependence on raw material exports and shift toward a more sustainable, value-added economy.
