IDR 116 TRILLION INVESTED IN INDONESIA’S WEST PAPUA FERTILIZER MEGAPROJECT

PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) has committed IDR 116 trillion to establish the Fakfak Fertilizer Industrial Area in West Papua. This megaproject aims to enhance Indonesia’s fertilizer production capacity, ensuring a stable supply for the agricultural sector. President Director Rahmad Pribadi stated that the investment is part of the company’s broader strategy to expand production and support national food security. Rahmad highlighted the critical role of fertilizer in achieving food self-sufficiency, citing Indonesia’s past success in rice self-sufficiency in 1984, which was driven by fertilizer industry development starting in 1959. With Indonesia’s population projected to reach 324 million by 2045, national rice demand is expected to increase by six million tons, making fertilizer production expansion essential. He further emphasized that fertilizer contributes approximately 62% to agricultural productivity, making it a key factor in ensuring sufficient food supply. Without adequate fertilizer availability, achieving food self-sufficiency would be extremely challenging. The Fakfak project represents a strategic effort to meet future agricultural demands and strengthen Indonesia’s food security.Source: https://money.kompas.com/read/2025/03/22/171824526/megaproyek-pupuk-indonesia-gelontorkan-rp-116-triliun-bangun-pabrik-di-fakfak#google_vignette (ICE GIACARTA)
