SCIENCE-BASED TARGET LAUNCHED FOR INDONESIA'S SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD INDUSTRY

The Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) has introduced new guidance enabling seafood companies to establish science-based targets that include marine and maritime protection in Indonesia. This initiative aims to address critical environmental challenges such as overfishing, marine biodiversity loss, and pollution, which have significantly degraded ocean ecosystems. As the ocean serves as the largest carbon absorber on the planet, these targets will help businesses implement conservation measures while enhancing the sustainability and resilience of their supply chains. According to SBTN Executive Director Erin Billman, this newly established framework provides a globally recognized approach for improving corporate action across land, freshwater, and marine environments. Developed with guidance from WWF and Conservation International, the standard is supported by organizations such as the Marine Stewardship Council and The Nature Conservancy. The initiative ensures that all stakeholders within the seafood industry’s value chain can adopt science-based sustainability methods to strengthen marine ecosystems and long-term industry viability. Beyond the seafood sector, SBTN has been advancing nature-based targets for various industries. Companies such as Kering, GSK, and Holcim have committed to verified science-based targets focused on land and freshwater use. These initiatives demonstrate a growing corporate recognition of the need to integrate sustainable practices into business operations, reinforcing resilience against environmental degradation while ensuring long-term resource availability. In a broader context, a recent report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) underscored the urgent need for increased financial investments to address global biodiversity loss. The report emphasized the necessity of mobilizing international funding, particularly from developed nations, to tackle the escalating nature crisis. Significant financial support is deemed crucial to implementing effective conservation strategies and securing a sustainable future for ecosystems worldwide.Source: https://lestari.kompas.com/read/2025/03/21/201500786/target-berbasis-sains-diluncurkan-untuk-industri-seafood-berkelanjutan  (ICE GIACARTA)
