EXCLUSIVE: US RESUMES MAJORITY OF GRANTS TO JORDAN

AmmanNet has learned from independent sources that the administration of US President Donald Trump has quietly agreed to return the majority of grants provided to the Jordanian government. The US Embassy in Amman has not commented on the matter at the time of writing. Informed sources report that the US government has deposited $845.1 million into Jordan’s account, allocated to support the country’s economic modernization. Additionally, approximately $431 million earmarked for the Jordanian Armed Forces has been approved to enhance peace and security in Jordan. Several humanitarian grants have also been reinstated, including support for the Jordanian Water Conveyor, municipalities, and health projects. While the exact nature of the projects and the amounts allocated remain unclear, it is evident that most government support has been restored. However, support for civil society, as well as projects related to transparency, governance, and civil society, has largely been canceled. Among the projects permanently canceled is the “Voice” project, managed by Internews, which supports civil society organizations through media outreach. The project aimed at strengthening political party governance and communication, supervised by the International Republican Institute (IRI), has also been canceled. In addition, several other social, humanitarian, and human rights grants have been permanently discontinued. The United States signed a seven-year cooperation agreement with Jordan in 2022, under which the US pledged to support governmental and non-governmental projects in the Kingdom worth at least $1.45 billion annually. It remains uncertain whether the Trump administration will honor the commitments made under this agreement or whether additional aid will be provided to cover outstanding obligations. (ICE AMMAN)
