SWEDEN JOINS GLOBAL EFFORT TO BUILD THE WORLD'S LARGEST RADIO TELESCOPE

Sweden joins global effort to build the world's largest radio telescopeSweden is joining the construction of the SKA (Square Kilometer Array) observatory, which will be the largest radio telescope facility in the world,Dagens Nyheter/DN reports. This observatory aims to provide unprecedented detail regarding the universe. Sweden will contribute approximately SEK 300 million to the project, which has a total budget of SEK 23 billion. The SKA observatory will comprise two significant radio telescopes: one in South Africa featuring 197 large antennas and the other in Australia with 131,072 smaller antennas. These antennas will capture radio signals from space, which will then be analysed by powerful computers and made accessible to researchers globally. Sweden has been engaged in this initiative since 2012 and has recently signed a letter of intent to officially join the intergovernmental research collaboration. The observatory is projected to be completed by 2029, with initial observational data available to scientists in the coming years. (ICE STOCCOLMA)
