2024 WAS A RECORD YEAR FOR NORWEGIAN SEAFOOD EXPORTS BY VALUE
Norway exported 2.8 million tonnes of seafood in 2024, for a record value of NOK 175.4bn. The value of seafood exports in December alone reached NOK 15.1bn, up NOK 1.5bn compared with December 2023. The volume represents 38 million meals per day throughout the year. “Once again, Norwegian seafood exports have set new records,” says fisheries & ocean policy minister Marianne Sivertsen Næss (Ap): “The Norwegian seafood industry is a fantastic example of how sustainability can be combined with value creation.” Norway exported seafood products to 152 countries, 1 less than in 2023. Poland proved to be the largest market in terms of value at NOK 18bn, followed by Denmark (NOK 13.8bn), the USA (NOK 13.3bn) and the Netherlands (NOK 11.2bn), though turnover was down in all three countries. The largest growth markets in 2024 were China, South Korea and the UK. Farmed salmon is by far the main fish commodity with an export volume last year of 1.26 million tonnes and a value of NOK 123bn, up NOK 617m compared with the previous year. “There is every reason to be proud of the Norwegian seafood industry,” says Christian Chramer, CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council: “We have succeeded in building a strong brand over a long period, and people around the world want Norwegian seafood, despite the challenges in the world with war, conflicts, protectionism and trade barriers. Seafood is Norway’s most sustainable export industry and accounts for 25% of mainland exports and provides around 100,000 jobs in Norway alone.” Chramer explains that the strong growth in value is mainly due to the weak kroner and that a strengthening of the NOK will affect future export values accordingly. He also points out that 2024 was a challenging year for many salmon growers with higher summer sea temperatures, increased costs, and a lower average fish weight. (ICE STOCCOLMA)
