ETHIOPIA: ETHIOPIA, SOMALIA COMMIT TO COOPERATION IN HISTORIC ‘ANKARA DECLARATIO

On December 11, 2024, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud signed the Ankara Declaration during a trilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara.The leaders committed to respecting each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing cooperation to achieve shared prosperity. A key aspect of the agreement is Ethiopia’s access to the sea, which both leaders acknowledged could provide significant benefits while respecting Somalia's territorial rights. They agreed to initiate technical negotiations by February 2025 to finalize arrangements for this access.The declaration also highlighted Somalia's recognition of the contributions of Ethiopian soldiers to African Union missions and expressed gratitude to Turkey for facilitating the talks. This agreement is viewed as a vital step toward enhancing regional stability and economic collaboration in the Horn of Africa. (ICE ADDIS ABEBA)
