THAI RICE EXPORTS SOAR IN JUNE THANKS TO INDONESIAN DEMAND BOOST

Thailand's rice exports surged in June due to Indonesia's increased demand for food security. The country exported 1.02 million tonnes of rice, up 78.7% YoY, bringing its rice exports in the first half of the year to 5.08 million tonnes. The value of rice exports in the first half of this year was US$3.30 billion, with $644 million generated in June alone. The Thai Rice Exporters Association president, Charoen Laothamatas, attributed the surge to the Indonesian government's plan to ensure food security. However, the outlook for Thailand's rice exports remains uncertain, with India's lifting of its white rice export ban and global rice market flooding potentially hurting the industry. Thailand should overcome this by increasing productivity, generating more income for farmers, and boosting competitiveness. (ICE BANGKOK)
