CHINESE CONTRACTOR COMPLETES NEOM TUNNELING WORK
Beijing-headquartered China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) has announced that it has completed the construction works and handed over the adits and portals for infrastructure serving The Line at Neom. The adits and portals, measuring 9.48 kilometres (km), will be openings and access points for the tunnels that form part of the 170km infrastructure backbone of The Line project. The Spine is the infrastructure corridor running parallel to The Line and includes a high-speed rail and the Connector South, which links the industrial zone, Oxagon, to The Line. US-based Aecom is the design consultant and US-based Bechtel is the project management consultant on the Spine railway network project. The construction works are ramping up on the Spine infrastructure network. In April, a consortium led by Spanish firm FCC Construccion announced that it had achieved 25% completion on the Spine tunnels for The Line at Neom. The consortium includes Beijing-headquartered China State Construction Engineering Corporation and the local Shibh Al Jazira Contracting Company as partners. In a social media post, FCC Construccion said that it is digging tunnels at a rate of 1.2km a month. The tunnels are 8.7km long. In June 2022, contracts for the project's Mountain Running Tunnels were awarded. The FCC Construccion-led consortium won $2.7bn-worth of contracts for lots two and three of the scheme. A separate contract worth about $1.8bn for lots four and five was awarded to a team of Archirodon, Samsung Engineering and Hyundai Engineering & Construction.
