HONG KONG SUMMIT TO TEST WALL STREET SENTIMENT AMID GEOPOLITICAL STRAINS, tech volatility

Hong Kong summit to test Wall Street sentiment amid geopolitical strains, tech volatilityWhen hundreds of global finance leaders converge in Hong Kong this week, the question on their minds will be whether traditional investment strategies remain viable against escalating geopolitical friction and the rapid ascent of artificial intelligence.Investors have been keen for an answer – or at least clear clues – given that US President Donald Trump has been threatening a new round of strikes on Iran, and after Friday’s sharp sell-off in technology stocks elevated concerns about the sustainability of the AI investment boom. The “Rethinking the Playbook” theme for the fifth annual Global Financial Leaders’ Investment Summit, organised by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), will provide a platform to address these topics.Observers expect the participating financial heavyweights to share their thoughts on persistent macroeconomic headwinds, including elevated interest rates and the question of tighter regulatory scrutiny of AI, while exploring ways to channel private and patient capital into regional growth initiatives. In the meantime, the event also offers an opportunity to present Hong Kong’s vision for a city with grand ambitions in the financial industry, including its pitch as an alternative venue during a time of global market volatility.“There’s a need [for investors] to further diversify,” according to Tommy Ong, managing director of consultancy T.O. & Associates, adding that participants’ stance on AI would be closely watched. The agenda provided by HKMA shows three dedicated sessions on AI: investment prospects in power grids and data facilities, whether AI technology can match the productivity gains of the digital revolution, and how investors can separate speculative froth from sustainable returns. The three-day summit kicks off with a welcome dinner on Monday before Tuesday’s main conference at the Four Seasons Hotel, where Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu will deliver the keynote address and Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po is also slated to speak. The gathering will conclude on Wednesday with an investment forum. The summit is expected to draw about 280 delegates, including around 120 group chairmen and chief executives, according to data from the organiser.Banking heads feature prominently. Barclays group CEO C.S. Venkatakrishnan is back after missing the past two years, while UBS group CEO Sergio Ermotti joins the line-up for the first time. They will be joined on Tuesday’s panel sessions by returning speakers, including HSBC group CEO Georges Elhedery, JPMorgan Chase vice-chairman Daniel Pinto and Bank of China president Zhang Hui.The high-profile gathering is expected to provide a crucial litmus test for Wall Street sentiment.Morgan Stanley CEO Ted Pick and Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon will return to the stage on Tuesday, a year after their comments predicting market corrections of more than 10 per cent triggered sell-offs across Asian and European bourses. Both banks have since posted record quarterly revenues and co-led SpaceX’s US$75 billion initial public offering in June, the largest on record. A Tuesday session will ask whether their confidence in the market has changed.Market participants will also look to the opening keynote and a dedicated session featuring mainland Chinese regulators for signals on Beijing’s support for Hong Kong and on cross-border investment channels.Vice-Premier He Lifeng will deliver the opening keynote by video, followed by a panel of mainland financial regulators moderated by HKMA chief executive Eddie Yue Wai-man.Analysts also see the summit as a “timely opportunity” for Hong Kong to showcase its economic reforms and reinforce its standing as an international financial hub, as it competes with financial centres such as Singapore, London and New York. The gathering comes less than two months after the Hong Kong government unveiled its first five-year plan in September, setting out measures to strengthen the city’s international financial standing. On October 20 and 21, Hong Kong hosted its first Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Finance Ministers’ Meeting, where finance chiefs from 21 economies agreed on closer macroeconomic policy coordination and wider access to financial services.https://www.scmp.com/business/banking-finance/article/3372873/hong-kong-summit-test-wall-street-sentiment-amid-geopolitical-strains-tech-volatility?pgtype=live (ICE HONG KONG)
