SINGAPORE-LINKED DATA CENTRE PROJECT FACES GROWING REJECTION IN INDONESIA

The planned 640 MW AI data centre campus in Jatiluhur, West Java, spearheaded by Singapore-based BDx Data Centers, has been subjected to a temporary construction halt since late September 2026. This suspension was put in place because both the necessary environmental impact assessment and the requisite building approval had not yet been formally issued for the site. Alongside these regulatory hurdles, the facility has drawn substantial concern regarding its projected consumption of water and electricity. Such resource demands are especially critical given the strategic importance of the nearby Jatiluhur reservoir, which serves as an essential source for Greater Jakarta’s municipal water supply as well as for local agricultural irrigation systems. This case clearly illustrates the ongoing friction and fundamental challenge of balancing Indonesia’s broader ambitions to attract digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence investments against strict environmental safeguards and regional resource availability. Furthermore, the situation underscores the delicate necessity of effective coordination between central and regional government authorities during major development initiatives. Left unresolved, these complications carry notable potential implications for broader investor confidence, while simultaneously posing significant questions for the future development and trajectory of Indonesia’s emerging data centre sector.Source: https://asia.nikkei.com/business/technology/singapore-linked-data-center-projects-face-growing-rejection-in-indonesia (ICE GIACARTA)
