The Indonesian government is accelerating the restoration of the Sarulla Geothermal Power Plant in North Tapanuli as part of its commitment to supporting the global green energy transition. The project aims to maximize the region’s geothermal potential of 1,100 MW by restoring the plant’s installed capacity to 330 MW. To achieve this, the government and stakeholders plan to secure approximately USD 270 million in investment, with administrative processes expected to be completed by October 2026 and capacity upgrades scheduled for 2027–2028. Currently, the plant’s output has fallen from its installed capacity to 220 MW due to declining steam pressure in the geothermal field. The additional investment will be used to repair the steam production system and restore full performance.
