INDONESIA'S KAI TO CONNECT SUMATRA RAILWAY LINE, REQUIRING IDR448 TLN INVESTMENT

Indonesian state-owned operator of public railways, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), is preparing a large-scale project to integrate Sumatra’s fragmented railway system into a continuous network connecting Banda Aceh in the north to Bandar Lampung in the south. The initiative aims to improve connectivity, logistics, and economic integration across the island. To achieve this, KAI plans to reactivate 726.5 km of inactive rail lines and develop an additional 1,110 km of new routes, with total investment estimated at US$20–25 billion (around IDR 350–448 trillion). As an initial step, KAI is prioritizing the construction of the 478 km Banda Aceh–Besitang line, which is currently in the detailed engineering design (DED) phase. The broader plan also includes new routes linking major regions such as Rantau Prapat, Dumai, Pekanbaru, Jambi, and Bengkulu, along with a coal transport line in South Sumatra. Overall, the project reflects a long-term strategy to modernize rail infrastructure and support regional development across Sumatra.Source: https://katadata.co.id/berita/industri/6a1fd106f0024/kai-akan-hubungkan-jalur-kereta-sumatra-butuh-investasi-rp-448-triliun (ICE GIACARTA)
