Western Thessaloniki and the port are gaining new rail connections through the Thessaloniki Western Suburban Railway project and the connection of Pier 6 of the Thessaloniki Port Authority to the existing rail network.Hellenic Railways (OSE) is proceeding with the project tender, following the publication of Phase B and the launch of the final stage for the submission of binding bids from participants. The project has a total budget of 53.4 million euros, excluding VAT.The Western Suburban Line, with seven stops, will create a new rail corridor for areas of the city that are currently underserved by fixed-track public transport. At the same time, the connection of Pier 6 of the Thessaloniki Port Authority (ThPA) to the existing railway network via a new double-track railway line will enhance the port's ability to handle freight flows by rail, reducing the need to transport cargo through the urban fabric and strengthening Thessaloniki’s position on the intermodal transport map.Following the signing of the contract, construction of the Thessaloniki Western Suburban Line is expected to be completed within 18 months, while the rail connection to ThPA’s Pier 6 has a 36-month implementation timeline.
