KYRANAKIS: ATHENS IS COMPLETING THE LARGEST RENEWAL OF ITS PUBLIC TRANSPORT BUS fleet in decades
Athens is completing the largest renewal of its fleet of public transport buses in decades, Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis said.With the addition of another 205 new buses, the total number of newly introduced vehicles either already operating or about to enter circulation reaches 1,076, while fleet renewal now approaches 80%. The additions include 125 electric buses, 13 natural gas-powered IVECO buses, and 67 new CNG Industria Italiana Autobus Menarini vehicles, joining the 871 new buses already serving passengers daily.Kyranakis noted that in 2019 the newest bus in the fleet was around 10 years old, while most vehicles had been manufactured in 1999. Today, more than one-third of the new buses are electric, another third operate on natural gas, and the remainder are modern diesel-powered vehicles using new technology.Fleet expansion is expected to continue in the coming years. By 2028, an additional 617 new vehicles are planned through European and national funding programs, bringing the active urban transport fleet to more than 2,000 vehicles, of which approximately 1,700 will be brand new.
