INDONESIA POISED TO BECOME ASIA’S C-130 HERCULES MAINTENANCE HUB

Indonesia is poised to become a regional maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) hub for C-130 Hercules aircraft after the United States proposed centralizing such operations in the country. The plan includes establishing a Heavy Maintenance Center capable of advanced repairs, overhauls, and upgrades for the C-130J fleet. Analysts view this as a strategic opportunity, given Indonesia’s large Hercules fleet, its experience with newer variants, and its strategic location in Asia. A key advantage would be technology transfer, which could boost the country’s defense industry and enhance the skills of local engineers and technicians. The project could also bring economic benefits, especially if based at Kertajati International Airport, by creating jobs and stimulating local businesses. However, challenges remain, including preparing skilled workers, ensuring infrastructure readiness, and maintaining Indonesian control over the partnership. Experts also stress the need for careful diplomacy to avoid geopolitical concerns, in line with Indonesia’s neutral foreign policy. Indonesia’s recent success in independently conducting heavy maintenance on a C-130J strengthens its credibility, but transparency and clear limits on foreign involvement will be crucial.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/6672/defense-and-security/indonesia-poised-to-become-asia-s-c-130-hercules-maintenance-hub (ICE GIACARTA)
