INDONESIA TIGHTENS IMPORT CONTROLS TO SHIELD DOMESTIC INDUSTRIES

Indonesia is tightening its import regulations to protect domestic industries and improve trade efficiency. Trade Minister of Indonesia, Budi Santoso, explained that imports are categorized into prohibited, regulated, and unrestricted goods, with stricter licensing procedures to ensure transparency and accountability. Importers must hold a Business Identification Number (NIB), and certain commodities require additional licenses and technical verification by independent surveyors. The government has also expanded digitalization in trade services, making all licensing fully online through the Single Submission system (SSm) with a maximum five-day service period to reduce administrative barriers. These reforms are part of broader bureaucratic changes aimed at strengthening the investment climate and enhancing competitiveness. Indonesia has also become the most active user of trade safeguard measures globally, accounting for about 25% of such actions, to shield local industries from import surges that could threaten domestic manufacturing. By combining stricter oversight with digitalized processes, the government seeks to balance fair trade with strong protection for national industries.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/417164/indonesia-tightens-import-controls-to-shield-domestic-industries (ICE GIACARTA)
