INDONESIA HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENTER THE GLOBAL SEMICONDUCTOR SUPPLY CHAIN

Indonesia sees potential disruption in global chip supplies—such as a possible Samsung employee strike—as an opportunity to accelerate development of its domestic semiconductor industry. According to the Chairwoman of Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo), Shinta Kamdani, Indonesia holds key advantages including a large domestic market, rising demand for data centers, and abundant strategic minerals like silica sand, quartz, nickel, and tin—essential for semiconductor production. These factors position Indonesia to play a role in the upstream to midstream segments of the global supply chain, especially as companies diversify investments and shift supply chains across the Asia-Pacific region. However, while Indonesia has begun building its semiconductor ecosystem—particularly in assembly, testing, and IC design—it still faces major challenges, including limited development of wafer fabrication, regulatory uncertainty, infrastructure gaps, and shortages of skilled talent. To compete with regional players like Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore, Indonesia must strengthen incentives, improve industrial infrastructure, develop human capital, and establish a clear long-term roadmap. Strategic areas such as Batam and the Riau Islands are seen as key entry points for attracting investment and integrating Indonesia into the global semiconductor supply chain.Source: https://ekonomi.bisnis.com/read/20260519/257/1974635/apindo-ri-berpeluang-masuk-ke-rantai-pasok-semikonduktor-global (ICE GIACARTA)
