PRESIDENT PRABOWO APPROVES US$80B GIANT SEA WALL TO PROTECT NORTHERN JAVA
President Prabowo Subianto has launched a US$80 billion (IDR1,298 trillion) mega-project to build a 500-kilometer sea wall along Java’s northern coast, aiming to protect vulnerable coastal cities from rising sea levels and land subsidence. The initiative will begin in Jakarta Bay, with an estimated cost of US$8–10 billion for that section alone, and is expected to take 8–10 years to complete. The funding for this initial phase will be split evenly between the Jakarta Provincial Administration and the central government. A new authority body will be established to oversee and accelerate the project, which has been part of Indonesia’s national development agenda since 1995. The full-scale project, stretching from Banten to Gresik and projected to take 15–20 years, is being prioritized for high-risk areas like Jakarta and Semarang. The government is also inviting foreign construction firms from countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, and those in the Middle East and Europe to invest and participate. The urgency is underscored by environmental data showing land subsidence of up to 25 cm and sea level rise of up to 15 cm annually in some regions. Economic losses from flooding in Jakarta alone are already at IDR1 trillion per year and could surge to IDR10 trillion annually within a decade if no action is taken.#Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/4502/national-resilience/president-prabowo-greenlights-us-80-b-giant-sea-wall-to-protect-northern-java-coast (ICE GIACARTA)
