INDONESIA AIMS FOR SUGAR SELF-SUFFICIENCY IN THREE YEARS

Indonesia’s Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has launched an ambitious plan to achieve national sugar self-sufficiency within three years. The strategy focuses on deregulating outdated policies, rehabilitating underperforming sugarcane fields—86% of which are currently damaged—and expanding plantations by at least 200,000 hectares. Supported by a IDR30–40 trillion (US$2.45 billion) budget approved by President Prabowo, the program will fund fertilizer subsidies, high-quality sugarcane cuttings, and improved irrigation systems. Sulaiman also proposed reforms to the agricultural credit system, suggesting a IDR50 million (US$3,072) per hectare loan ceiling under the People’s Business Credit (KUR) scheme. He emphasized that sugar self-sufficiency is now a concrete national agenda, with formal deregulation proposals to be submitted soon.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/358909/indonesia-aims-for-sugar-self-sufficiency-in-three-years (ICE GIACARTA)
