INDONESIA TO ROLL OUT LARGE-SCALE BATTERY STORAGE FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS
Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) plans to begin large-scale implementation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in 2035, with a national target of 34 gigawatts by 2060. BESS, which stores energy from renewable sources like solar and wind for later use, plays a vital role in supporting the country's energy transition and stabilizing electricity supply, especially from intermittent sources. The plan is outlined in the National Energy General Plan (RUEN), and the systems will initially focus on solar power to extend electricity access in remote areas. Director of Various New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Andriah Feby Misna, emphasized BESS's compact design and flexibility, making it ideal for microgrids and challenging geographies. In the second phase, the storage system may expand to support wind, biomass, and other renewable sources. PT PLN and its subsidiaries are already developing BESS projects, including a 5 MW system with Indonesia Battery Corporation and a 14.2 MWh system for the new capital city (IKN).Source: https://hijau.bisnis.com/read/20250429/652/1872960/ri-masif-implementasi-baterai-penyimpanan-di-proyek-ebt-mulai-2035 (ICE GIACARTA)
