GOVT UNVEILS RWF360BN PROJECT TO CONSTRUCT 215KM OF TARMAC ROADS

On March 24, the Rwandan government launched a major infrastructure project to construct 215 kilometers of tarmac roads aimed at enhancing internal connectivity and boosting regional trade with neighboring countries including Uganda, DR Congo, and Burundi. The $260 million (Rwf360 billion) project will cover key roads such as Ngororero–Musanze–Cyanika, Bugarama–Bweyeye, Ngororero (Kazabwe)–Rutsiro, and Kinigi–Kora. These roads, currently in poor condition, are essential for improving mobility, transporting agricultural goods, and facilitating access to essential services. Approved in October 2024, the project is part of a broader regional integration initiative supported by the Government of Rwanda and international partners including the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Officials emphasized the project’s alignment with goals for sustainable urban development and economic resilience, highlighting its potential to create jobs and stimulate trade. Authorities also stressed the importance of climate-resilient infrastructure, especially in areas prone to landslides. Measures such as planting trees and using Rwanda’s climate-resilient infrastructure guidelines are being encouraged to ensure long-term sustainability. (ICE ADDIS ABEBA)
