The contractor prequalification process for the Mukaab, the centrepiece of the New Murabba destination in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has reached the final stage. "The prequalification of the contractors is in the final stages and we are targeting to float a few packages after the summer," said Thomas Nilsson, executive director of delivery, Mukaab District, New Murabba. The project is divided into three superpackages – the basement; four towers at each corner of the cube; and a structural dome supporting the roof and a three-level basement. Nilsson said the basement excavation works are ongoing, with test piles due next month. He also added that the first raft package of the Mukaab will be out in the market sometime in June. Nilsson cited that all three packages will be floated to the market within one year and that, given the tight delivery schedule, they are working closely with the supply chain to enhance project delivery. Overall, the New Murabba destination will total more than 25 million square metres (sq m) of floor area and will feature more than 104,000 residential units, 9,000 hotel rooms and over 980,000 sq m of retail space. The scheme will include 1.4 million sq m of office space, 620,000 sq m of leisure facilities and 1.8 million sq m of space dedicated to community facilities. The new project will be developed around the concept of sustainability and will include green areas and walking and cycling paths to promote healthy, active lifestyles and community activities. The living, working and entertainment facilities will be created around a 15-minute walking radius. The area will use an internal transport system and will be about a 20-minute drive from the airport.
