INDONESIA & EU DEVELOP GREEN ELECTRICITY INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUPPORT THE NZE 2060

PT PLN (Indonesia's State Electricity Company) is advancing Indonesia’s clean energy transition through strategic collaboration with the European Union, KfW Development Bank, and PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (SMI) to develop large-scale pumped storage hydropower projects in North Sumatra and East Java. The EU and KfW have provided EUR 6 million in technical assistance for feasibility studies of the Sumatra Pumped Storage project in Simalungun and the Grindulu Pumped Storage project in Pacitan. PLN, SMI, and KfW have also signed a head of agreement to strengthen their joint commitment to renewable energy infrastructure, aligning with Indonesia’s 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan. PLN Finance Director Sinthya Roesly emphasized that renewable energy projects are crucial for accelerating the energy transition and require innovative financing schemes and broad collaboration. The Sumatra project will use Lake Toba as a lower reservoir with an upper reservoir built via a ring dam system, requiring an investment of about USD 582 million. The Grindulu project will comprise four units with a total capacity of 1,000 MW, with investment estimated between USD 1.08–1.3 billion. Both projects form part of Team Europe’s EUR 3.4 billion financing package supporting Indonesia’s energy transition. EU Representative Jerome Pons highlighted the Global Gateway initiative’s role in building a resilient, low-emission power system, while PT SMI’s Faris Pranawa underscored the synergy between domestic and international partners as a catalyst for green financing. This collaboration, following commitments made at COP28 Dubai 2023, represents a concrete step toward achieving Indonesia’s Net Zero Emissions target by 2060 or earlier.Source: https://katadata.co.id/berita/energi/691b0d2ca7b9f/pln-dan-uni-eropa-kembangkan-infrastruktur-listrik-hijau-dukung-target-nze-2060 (ICE GIACARTA)
