MCGILL AND AIRBUS PARTNER TO ADVANCE AEROSPACE INNOVATION IN CANADA

A partnership agreement was announced on June 16, 2025, between McGill University and Airbus that strengthens the ties between industry and academia, with the goal of shaping the future of aviation through sustainable technologies, cutting-edge research and real-world applications.Focus on innovationAt the core of the partnership is a focus on critical innovation areas, including sustainable aviation, urban air mobility, artificial intelligence and alternative fuels – domains that align with both McGill’s research strengths and Airbus’s global strategic priorities. The agreement not only supports collaborative research but also provides hands-on experiential learning for engineering students through internships, applied research projects, competitions and technical seminars led by Airbus experts. And, according to Dominique Bérubé, Vice President, Research and Innovation at McGill University, it’s a collaboration that’s set to impact the aerospace research in Canada going forward.“This partnership illustrates McGill’s strength in applied research and technological innovation,” she asserts. “By combining our expertise with that of a world leader in aeronautical and aerospace engineering, we are creating an environment conducive to scientific advances that will have a significant impact on the aerospace industry of tomorrow.”From classroom to production floorWith Airbus’s A220 assembly line located just kilometres from McGill’s Montreal campus, the collaboration offers a direct pathway from classroom to production floor. And for manufacturers and OEMs operating across the country, it’s an initiative that offers a significant, and much-needed, talent pipeline equipped with industry-relevant skills in systems integration, sustainable materials, automation and smart manufacturing. The McGill Institute for Aerospace Engineering will play a central role in delivering this collaboration, enriching student training through access to Airbus’s expertise, tools, and development platforms.
